Director Rian Johnson has release his extremely interesting proof - of - concept television for his reach clock time - travelling movie Looper , and it was footage of Seven and Blade Runner that helped show Hollywood what he was test to do — and convince them to lease him make his movie .
When a managing director has a less - than - dim-witted approximation for a film , and needs to explain it to Hollywood execs so as to get them to give him / her money , he / she usually get to one of these proof - of - construct television . As Johnson reveal :
This is a strange curio I reckon might be interesting – just after I finish the script for Looper but before we began preproduction I asked Joe to register some voice - over , and with help from my friend Ronen Verbit construct this “ fake trailer ” using clips from other movies . This is a somewhat vulgar thing to do when you ’re trying to get a movie off the ground , but it was the first meter I try it . It was meant to show more some of the film ’s tone , and to show how the odd concept could be confront in a well-defined and compelling path in the marketing . Zach Johnson did the sketch . Note that we had n’t begun the cast process yet , and the clips were choose just based on their visuals and not by who is in them .
It ’s very cool to me how closely this construct trailer , despite using footage from two very unlike movies , in reality looks and feels like Looper . It ’s also in all probability worth note that since Looper almost sure enough helped Johnson land the gig for Star Wars : Episode VIII , we have Brad Pitt and Blade Runner to thank for that as well .
