io9 was born a year ago today . No , it ’s not the Temporal Cold War – really , it ’s only been one year since we launched by postinga cheesy Hulk videoand pictures ofexploding nanowires .

We may have unleash io9 on the unsuspecting masses on Jan. 2 , 2008 , but several of us had been working on the blog for about six months before that . Nick Denton , who owns our parent company Gawker Media , had been concerned for a while in doing some variety of futurist or scifi situation . And in May of 2007 then - managing editor program Lockhart Steele had coffee bean with me in San Francisco to talk about whether I might like to run such a blog .
My spirit was basically “ hell yeah , ” and over the next few months we start prototyping what eventually became the blog you are reading today . It started as a humble mental testing site living at a blogspot address , and eventually transmigrate over the Gawker servers in fall 2007 . By that sentence , I had hired two full clip editors to work with me : Charlie Jane Anders(still our supernaturally practiced news editrix ) andKevin Kelly . We were blogging our asses off , working out the look and stove of topic for io9 , with slew of feedback from Lockhart ’s successor , the excellent Noah Robischon , as well as Nick .
We all wanted io9 to be more than a fan website . Yes , we would be covering the essential scifi entertainment word , but we wanted to go beyond that into prowess , culture , fashion , technology , and science . I thought a mountain about the magazine Omni , which I read voraciously in the 1970s and 80s . It was run by Kathy Keeton , an ex - exotic dancer who had fallen in dearest with technology and eventually wed Penthouse Magazine magnate Bob Guccione . He helped her launch Omni , which she turned into a slick , futuristic magazine publisher that share with press clipping - border science and release cool scientific discipline fable stories by the great unwashed like Harlan Ellison , Joe Haldeman and Howard Waldrop . By the prison term io9 set up exactly one class ago , we had almost 1000 posts on the blog . I had even writtenan io9 pronunciamento , and inventeda narrative that explained what io9 meant . ArtistEliza Gauger‘s picture of an io9er graced our flag ( you may see it in purple aura below ) .

fortunately , our maniacal enthusiasm paid off : We beat nearly 7 million hits that January , and we ’ve proceed to farm since then . Thanks for our success should go primarily to our ( opinionative ) consultation , filled with future - disposed masses who come every day to read – and comment , andoccasionally post .

After Kevin left for immature pastures in March , Meredith Woernercame on display board from Us Weekly to be our crack amusement newsman , andGraeme McMillanjoined us from Newsarama to be our comics tsar and weekend editor . Also this year , Lauren Davishas contributed thoughtful , obsessively - detailed culture coverage ; and we ’ve had explosively splendid science writing fromMichael Reilly , Nivair Gabriel , andEd Grabianowski . We ’ve also been lucky enough to haveStephanie Foxas our resident infographic superior , and occasional columns fromLynn Peril(who will be back shortly to write about the new season of Lost!),Joshua Glenn , Geoff Manaugh , Ann & Jeff VanderMeer , Lisa Katayama , andTerry Johnson . AndAustin Grossmanhas always put in admirable client appearance .
