When news of the Classmate tabletbroke yesterday , it was arduous to have a go at it what to think . In terms of spec , the gadget is a far slew well that the Classmate 2.0 , but aside from the Modern tablet form gene , the diminutive netbook did n’t seem to include any truly innovative newfangled features . During the Intel Developer Forum today I go to fold around with the Modern Classmate , and my suspicions were confirm : barring a late - stage killer lineament , this iteration of Intel ’s OLPC killer will be sort of gimpy . Intel had a couple of Classmate 2s set out as well , which looks admittedly date next to the tablet . The raw design learn some cues from democratic netbooks like the EeePC and the MSI Wind , with an emphasis on slimness and a forrad - sloping keyboard . The case , though still in growth , looks more earnest than its harbinger . There ’s a new webcam that with vertical tilt capability , and a nifty home push button on the covert ’s bezel that returns the substance abuser to the desktop . speak of the desktop , the Classmate still function XP , and Intel has built a simple splashboard with commonly used icons for easy touch access , though using XP ’s regular functions with your fingers wo n’t be any easier than on other touchscreen pad of paper . A stylus is included .
The fact that it looks and behaves like a consumer subnotebook is bewildering . Without a consecrate educational OS , multitouch or even child - friendly looks the Classmate seems to have curve off into overcrowded netbook territory . It seems plenty functional as a compact tablet though , so if the toll is right it could well deliver the goods at that . The gadget is still in ontogenesis , so at least Intel theoretically has a opportunity that make this affair interesting . [ Giz at Israeli Defense Force ]
