So long , Google Glass . Or at least as we know it .
Google will be weave downthe Explorers program , boot the ostracized wearable from the Google X program , and handing the rein to Nest CEO Tony Fadell . Google will stop sell Glass on January 19 ( except to companies and developers ) after justopening up world-wide sales of last April . So if you were ever planning to grease one’s palms a kinky and ultimately fruitless piece of computing history , you have your deadline .
This is n’t a end knell for Glass but rather dramatic restructuring of the program . Google will pivot away from wide - bed covering public testing of the machine , as it has done for the retiring two years , and instead develop in secret à la Apple and Nest .

Other than that , what this stand for for the Glass plan is uncertain , whether the move to put under Fadell ’s direction suggestion toward the construction process , plan focus , or even the smart home ambitions of Glass . Also , Google is a primary investor in thenotoriously secretive AR companionship Magic Leapand so maybe the society ’s revise its approximation of what augmented reality should be .
Either way , the Glass program needed to do something tostop hemorrhaging developersinterested in the weird AR equipment . It also did n’t help that the widget engendered itsown negative nickname , “ Glasshole . ”
Whatever the subject , Glass is getting a much needed shakeup for fear of die off altogether . [ The Wall Street Journal / Google Glass ]
