Kong converge a character name Suko , with whom he develops a paternal relationship . Seemingly , the idea is to humanize the fictional character while also giving Godzilla x Kong its own MonsterVerse perspective . It ’s well - intentioned , but at last not all that linear . The at times funny or cunning vista mostly work to slow down the main plot which was already go on us from bigger action cadence .

In the grand custom of the MonsterVerse film , human characters are more or less an second thought here too . We pass the most clock time with them , but anytime they ’re on screenland , we just want more Godzilla or Kong . And so , talented actors like Rebecca Hall and Bryan Tyree Henry get mostly lost in the mix . One somebody who does get the designation though is Dan Stevens . His persona , Trapper , a thrill - seeking vet who specialize in colossus , is so ridiculous , he really improves every scene he ’s in . Beyond him , everyone else just feel like fructify dressing .
Plus , everything builds in a way that ’s almost too methodical for this genre . There are mini - laid objet d’art throughout leave moments of excitement , and one or two Book of Revelation of note , but more often than not , most of the film finger like homework for a net test . The final test where , per the title of the movie , Godzilla and Kong will team up up to battle the threat they ’ve been sensing .
Now , I should n’t admit this , but I will . All of Godzilla x Kong ’s flaws credibly would have been forgive if that big finish , the mo the whole movie has been aim towards in an to a fault deliberate way , was a jaw - dropping show-stopper . But it is n’t . It ’s for sure coolheaded and impart all the story ribbon together in a logical way , including a very exciting summation for fans of the genre , but at no pointedness does anything in it feel as entertaining or surprising as the finale of the previous flick , which pitted the part first against each other , then against Mechagodzilla . If Godzilla x Kong had just stick around the landing place , I would ’ve been glad . It does not .

Watching Godzilla x Kong , I also could n’t help but wonder if this picture show was hurt in any room by the release and succeeder of Godzilla Minus One . On paper , multiple Godzilla movie released in such snug proximity would n’t be a trouble . specially if they ’re both tonally frivolous and fun . But Godzilla Minus One gave us excitement as well as emotion and poignance . It place an contiguous , well-timed barroom in our mind for what a Godzilla movie could be , even if that level of lineament is the elision , not the rule . It is , however , largely forgettable once it ends , and that ’s a letdown when you ’ve got two of the biggest stars ever , literally , together again .
