Over at Pacific Standard , science journalist David Dobbshas a thoughtful , intriguing clause about Steve Cole , a psychology research worker who has devoted his life to research the social proportion of genetic science . Cole and his fellow have studied bees , doll , monkeys , and man — and they ’ve found that social connection triggers a telltale cascade of activity in a suite of over a hundred genes , some of which are portion out across these species .
When birds hear each other sing , for example , researcher find changes in transmissible reflection within minutes . Similarly , humans who report feeling socially disconnected and solitary show a very different range of genetic activity than socially colligate people .
Dobbs writes :
Why would we have evolved this means ? The most probable answer is that an organism that respond quickly to fast - changing societal surroundings will more likely survive them . That organism wo n’t have to wait around , as it were , for unspoilt gene to germinate on the metal money floor . Immunologists find something like 25 years ago : Adapting to young pathogens the old - fashioned way — waiting for lifelike selection to favor factor that create resistance to specific pathogens — would occur too slowly to foresee the chop-chop changing pathogen surroundings . Instead , the immune system apply electronic internet of gene that can reply quickly and flexibly to new threat .
We appear to answer in the same way to our societal environment . face with an irregular , complex , ever - change universe to whom we must react successfully , our cistron bear accordingly — as if a fast , liquid response is a matter of life or death . . .
We sometimes think of “ social support ” as a sort of add - on , something extra that might somehow beef up us . Yet this view take over that human race ’s default state is purdah . It ’s not . But rarely has it been solitary .
What ’s intriguing is that all these socially - activated genes are also associated with the immune system . Without social connection , our resistant system react more weakly to threat — and this leads to a host of problems . The serious news , writes Dobbs , is that we can change our genetic manifestation and immune responses by change our societal behavior .
