Pluto is the unquestionably themost tike ( gnome ) planetin the solar system . Itscold , polar heartandunderworld - themed moonsare absolutely spooktacular , and yet none of us will ever get to see them in soul . Thankfully , new TV from NASA gives us an up tightlipped and personal tour of our favorite ( former ) major planet . It ’s almost as metal as the actual deal .
Using data fromNASA ’s New Horizons ballistic capsule , which famously flew by Pluto about two years ago , the space agency has reanimate the gnome planet ’s most spectacular feature . In the TV below , the viewer sailplane over Pluto ’s nitrogen ice plain — known as Sputnik Planitia — as well as the highland of Voyager Terra and Pioneer Terra . West of Sputnik , we get a glance of my favored Plutonian feature , a methane trash mountain range known asCthulhu Regio . Pluto ’s surface colors and topographic relief have been exaggerated to make the landscape bet particularly dramatic .
While we ’ll never get to hover above Pluto in literal life , at least we can inhabit vicariously through a NASA spacecraft hurl through the vacuum . Seems appropriately goth .
