Last night , Fede Alvarez ’s remaking of Sam Raimi ’s Evil Dead premiere at South by Southwest , and now that the critics have recovered from the fog of bogus blood , they are furiously typewrite up their reviews . The finding of fact so far ? Alvarez may not hit the glorious senior high school of Raimi ’s comedy - repulsion dealership , but he pays loving tribute to the original while entertaining horror lover with his wild and endlessly inventive take on movie gore . Spoilers ahead .
Varietyneatly sums up what many of the reviewer are saying about Alvarez ’s Evil Dead , calling it , “ the cinematic eq of a natural covering - band concert testimonial to a supergroup ’s greatest hits – albeit with a lot more bloodshed . ” This Evil Dead will be most enjoyed by those with an internal noesis of the original , who will get a squawk out of Alvarez ’s many winks and nods to Raimi ’s film . Bloody Disgusting says it will be well enjoyed in the theaters with other Evil Dead fans , adding , “ it might very well be the first “ case film ” purpose straightforwardly at the centre of those who ’ve been craving blood for all these years . ” ( Although the reviewer admit that Evil Dead is ultimately a better experience than it is a movie . )
Most of the reviewers seem to delight the modest twist on the “ youngster go to a cabin in the woods ” trope . Mia ( Jane Levy ) is a long - time junky who has wrangled her brother and a mathematical group of her friends into help her detox in the middle of nowhere . When evil is loose on the little cabin , Mia ’s friends initial mistake her left behavior for symptom of her detox , but soon they ’re care with a mess of demon and buckets of blood .

While Alvarez act on many of Raimi ’s key symbolisation , his primary contribution is his approach to gore , which goes several steps beyond the usual gas constant - rated fare . SaysFearNet :
The bodily fluid of the piece lies mostly in the over - the - top nature of the graphic fierceness , but make no mistake : the fresh Evil Dead is praiseworthily serious about get under your skin . To this final stage it employs simple leap scare , detailed onslaught sequences , some crazily creative butchery , and ( full of all ) a pace that dance around for about 25 bit before getting down to the ill-gotten poppycock and never have up . This is an intense , antic , and exhaustively enjoyable spell of horror film that make up due court to its herald while also trump up some memorable insanity of its own . That ’s what horror devotee broadly require from remaking : regard for the old mixed with an enthusiasm for something new .
Cinema Blendagrees :

The gore gene is what ultimately makes Evil Dead such a raucous crew - pleaser . Alvarez not only completely drenches the flick is the reddish , sticky stuff , he does so with impressive creative thinking and has an impressive hang for building tenseness . Whether it ’s a character cast line of descent all over another , reduce on their own face with a piece of drinking glass , stab someone with a hypodermic needle , or making good use of an electric carving knife , once the pedigree starts flowing it never really halt . But even when the scene are heavily set up with foreshadowing or schoolbook straight from the evil book ( which happen quite often ) , the audience still cringes and reacts , as you ca n’t believe what they actually get off with showing on blind .
However , despite Alvarez ’s deft direction of the gory visuals , many reviewers have complaint about the handwriting . Film School Rejects , for instance , says :
But the script by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues ( with conspicuously inconspicuous puncher - ups by Diablo Cody ) is flat , generic and utterly idiotic . Just as slasher plastic film had to evolve or pop off after Wes Craven ’s Scream , movies like this need to be smarter in a post - Cabin in the Woods world . Alvarez and friends apparently miss that memo though as everything about the playscript is lazy and the characters are far from compelling . The five friends act stupidly and unrealistically throughout . The movie merely moves through a serial publication of checked boxes to propitiate buff of the original and get to the action through the path of least narrative resistance .

ShockTillYouDropechoes their dashing hopes , saying that , “ malign Dead is glibly put together , but it is also insipid and vacuous , ” identify the picture as “ entertaining ” but wishing it added a picayune more to the writing style .
/Filmnotes that this failure does much to play up the genius of the original and Raimi ’s intuitive glide path to filmmaking :
The approach we see in this version underlines why Raimi ’s moving-picture show appeal to audiences beyond die - hard gorehounds . Raimi , [ Bruce ] Campbell , and [ Robert ] Tapert may claim that they were just goofing and working intuitively , but their intuition was sharp . They had a great handle on audience handling not only within a scene , but from one scene to the next , all linked by Campbell ’s winning front . Alvarez crafts a few setpieces , both unexampled and recreations , that ensnare the interview between apprehensiveness and fervor . But the connective spark , that implicit in intuition , seldom flares .

The Evil Dead remake opens April 5 , 2013 .
