The Federal Aviation Administration has conform to dozens of aerodrome nationwide with newfangled software to prevent , what it calls , “ wrong - surface landings , ” where inward planes crash into aircraft waiting on taxiway .
As detailed byAxios , the software is call ASDE - X Taxiway Arrival Prediction ( ATAP ) , and uses radar and sensors to notice planes that are lining up on airport taxiways — not rail — and set for lampoon . The computer software will then apprise air traffic restrainer , who can then notify the pilot of inbound aircraft , thereby preclude incorrect aerofoil events . The FAA told Axios that there were 1,641 of these event from October 2016 to the end of 2022 , though 83 % of those events did not involve commercial-grade aircrafts .
“ ATAP provide an surplus stratum of safe for pilots and passenger at airdrome with multiple parallel runway and taxiway , ” said Captain Jeffrey Sedin , airport ground environment chairwoman with the Air Line Pilots Association , in an FAAblog Emily Price Post .

The FAA said in its post that the ATAP software has prevent 50 faulty - surface landings since it was first introduced in 2018 at Seattle - Tacoma International Airport . In 2023 , there have already been eight alerting . Some aerodrome have a similar software called Airport Surface Surveillance Capability ( ASSC ) , but major airports that have ATAP let in Boston Logan International Airport , Charlotte Douglas International Airport , Newark International Airport , and Los Angeles International Airport .
“ All save are equal , ” said Giovanni Dipierro , former director of the FAA ’s Runway Safety Group , in the FAA ’s blog post . “ Aircraft as small as a Cessna Caravan 208 up to a Boeing 757 have been place around due to an ATAP alert . ”
While planes traditionally demesne on track designated by aircraft controller , some have landed on taxiways instead , posing a peril to flights on those stretches of tarmacadam . Infamously in 2006 , a pilotmistakenly landedon a taxi strip at Newark International Airport , when the flight crew mistook the taxi strip as a parallel track . The incident was subsequentlyinvestigatedby the National Transportation Safety Board .
