Roland Emmerich , who direct the [ first Universal Soldier ] moving-picture show that I was in — it was a little bit over - the - top comedic , and crimson but in a peculiar style . And John ’s take was a little different . He ’s a slight bit more serious conductor in a room , he wanted to make a little more existential . He need this lineament to sort of voice the quandary of all the Universal Soldiers they ’ve done over the years , there ’s a little minute of a Frankenstein myth behind his idea of the moving picture . These are monsters , but do we root for the monster or the creator ? Because the monster kills his creator , you see . I thought that was interesting , and there was something to solve with as an actor , alternatively of running around killing citizenry . I do n’t think I kill too many mass in this movie , I think it ’s just two . It must be a new record .
I comment that , your putting to death ratio is pretty low in this film , what was that like for you ?
Yeah , I could scarcely sleep at night , because I only killed two guys . I was unfulfilled or something . [ Laughs ] I ’m just jolly . I ’ve had my fair share of dead body numeration in other movies , so it ’s fine .
It ’s so great that this film is coming out because we really need more big legal action heroes , do you feel like this will reawaken that big action sub ?
Well I hope so , so I can be in a few of them . It ’s anybody ’s hypothesis , I suppose . But sometimes multitude get tired of sure matter . mayhap some multitude will get shopworn of the CG - take film , and maybe they require a lilliputian more rake and gut , a little more muscles , a little more realism . If you need those type of stories , then you need to put multitude in those character who are believable . I imagine you got ta reach out to some of the onetime Guy . Because there ’s something about the so - call 80s natural action hero . People were more strong-arm in those days , a muckle of them were existent champion like Seagal and Van Damme . Arnold was very strong-arm and Stallone , it was a unlike era . I cerebrate now with MMA being so with child , and a bunch of action fans watch these cage fights and so off , where you see real wildness . It gives you some sorting of book of facts , and I think filmmakers are realizing that . Of course they ’re still making a mint of CG pictures but I finger like there ’s a touch that genuine action is come back . ,
So what do you think is that position of military action movies the right way now ?
I ’m not such an expert because I do n’t observe that many movies , to be honest with you . There ’s such an outpouring of superhero movies , that I ’m not really interested so much in — guys fly from building to building , in curious look suit . I remember it ’s more for little kids , and that ’s apparently a very CG - drive film , where you may take anybody off the street and make them a superhero , and that ’s what the common man likes , because they can dream about being a superhero .
Whereas in my day , when I originate , the sort of movie Stallone , for instance , makes , it was more of a theatrical role manakin . You were more like a role framework as a person . If you were an action star , you were carry to be physically set . To show up wait good , and in reality be able to live up to your double to some extent . Where , that ’s not the case anymore . Yeah I was wear out leather underwear . It was very cold-blooded on the curing , I remember . That was a bit of a superhero , you ’re correct . That was the only one I ’ve done , that was a fun movie , it was a kids ’ flick . There ’s nothing wrong with it , that was 25 yr ago . There ’s nothing improper with those moving-picture show , they ’re fun … I heard about that [ remake ] a couple geezerhood back . They said that Brad Pitt was going to play the use or something . But no I have n’t see about it . There ’s a new Conan being made , there ’s been mint of Punishers , I opine there ’s been two or three after I did mine . There are too many superheroes to keep course of , I ’m a little snatch lost . But I think it ’s coolheaded . There ’s an appetite for the escape .
Would you do a cameo , if they made a new He - Man movie and you were offered a role ?
Yeah , why not . Why not . [ Laughs ] Even if I had to put the suit back on , I ’d do it .
What was it like preparing for the epic fight between you and Van Damme ?
I ’m always training quite a routine in my life , doing karate and weights , so I ’m commonly in pretty near shape . The stunt guy wire , they talk to you a little bit before , want you wish to do , what do n’t you want to do . Then they settle the bragging fight , and you look at it . They show it to Jean - Claude and to me , you change some of the motility . Then we rehearse it together , simplify it together for the camera . And then when you ’re shooting you change it up , and it ’s quite a prospicient battle too . I think we shot for 5 or 6 days that one competitiveness . Jean - Claude is very smart when it come to fights , he has very serious musical theme . I have n’t turn with him in a while . Of course I ’ve know him for a long time , but I think he was clever even the first time I meet him . He has very safe ideas .
