It seems like it ’s been eld since we got our first look atnoted Father of the Church image David Harbouras the new take onMike Mignola ’s Hellboyor heard anything major about Lionsgate ’s coming reboot of the beloved franchise . Thankfully , today , that changes .
In a recentinterview with Empiremagazine , director Neil Marshall explicate some of the logic behind the studio ’s decision to go with adarker , more grownup - oriented spinon Hellboy to differentiate this film from previous embodiment . And the clip debuted a new image …
This Hellboy , Marshall said , is so blood - gazump ( and universal gas constant - rated ) in large part because those were the kinds of stories Mignola originally write :
“ It was always a case of , ‘ When in doubt , go back to the source fabric . ’ Some of the stuff is pretty sick . More violent and more bloody . We were n’t ca-ca it with handcuffs on . ”
As much as we all loved Ron Perlman ’s Hellboy , there was a sure degree of lightsomeness that always made him a bite more lovable than his name let on . It ’s interesting that Marshall ’s choosing to at least partially endeavor to play up some of the character ’s more monstrous elements — something made open by his much grimier , more infernal show here .
What ’s really shivery , though , is that when Hellboy bursts into theaters on April 12 , 2019 , it ’s hold up to be insufferable to look at his barrel chest and not see it as a thumping , throbbing nitty-gritty .
