Jon Favreau acquaint the Cowboys and Aliens premiere at Comic - Con last Nox by telling us that it would be like the surprise Christmas present under the tree that you kept shaking , trying to figure out what was privileged . And then it turn out to be unexpectedly awesome .
He was right — his new flick really was like a nice present after a summer film season of sequels and adaptation that did n’t give us anything we did n’t already require . despoiler - free first impressions in the lead !
In causa you were hold your breath and queer your finger for an center - peel off , ticker - pound moving picture to make the summertime destruction in a fringe – yes , this movie is definitely awesome . It ’s packed with gorgeous imaging , down - and - dirty action , and an awful , nuanced performance from Harrison Ford . Though the whole mold was grand , I really felt like this was Ford ’s film . As a grizzled old war vet whose toughness has alienated his only Word , Ford finagle to hit the complete chord of badassery mixed with kindhearted regret . Who call up that a movie about cowboys , Indians , and villains fighting creepy - screwing outlander would also throng an emotional punch ? I did n’t . And so when the dolourous moment come — right in the middle of battle — it was a pleasure to feel more than just bloodlust .

Not that there was n’t plenty of bloodlust , and cheering for the good guys to ring together against a coarse foeman . Though the aliens themselves were n’t frightfully different from a good deal of other puppet we ’ve seen zooming down from space in other movies , their mission on Earth was wholly original and offer up a clever twist on Western themes .
The spaceships looked smashing , right down to their Roland de Lassus - like foreign tech ; and the exotic ship was splendidly project to look look like something decently out of the craggy landscape painting of the American west . Truly , this was the Weird Western done right . Favreau and his team blended their alien invasion and westerly imaging seamlessly , in a way that you may have imagined but in all likelihood have n’t seen done well before .
The plot was , as manufacturer Roberto Orci told us last year at Comic - Con , a gambol on classic John Ford Western The Searchers — except this clip , the outlander have abducted the people our Heron love , and the Indians are allies .

The ensemble cast solve terrifically well , with Adam Beach stealing the show as Ford ’s surrogate boy who has always been more likely to comply in the old man ’s footsteps than his loutish blood kin . Sam Rockwell and Daniel Craig are also fantastic , and there ’s a somewhat cheesy but nevertheless coolheaded winding with one character that really put the motion-picture show into X - Files - y good territorial dominion .
I ’m not going to tell you any more than that . Just see it , fer crissake . And if you ’re the kind of person who cries in movies , like me , bring a hankey too .
