Can you listen that devilish cackle?Chuckyreturns shortly ! The hit horror serial publication continues the killer doll ’s sovereignty of terror that set out withChild ’s meet back in 1988with a sly , camp horse sense of humour and a noteworthy power toevolve with the times . At a late Chucky press day , io9 get a chance to learn more about what ’s in fund forseason twofrom creatorDon Mancini .
This season , we ’ll meet Glen and Glenda — twin children of Chucky and Tiffany ( yes , the doll … yes , it ’s complicated … just watch over 2004 ’s Seed of Chucky and do n’t call for too many questions , okay?)—played as vernal adults by Lachlan Watson ( Theo on Netflix ’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ) . Speaking to a group of journalists including io9 , Mancini could n’t divulge too much about what ’s in store for the brace without spoiling the plot . But he did explain a bit about the technical wrangling that went into bringing the characters to Chucky .
“ Working with Lachlan Watson was a blast . They ’re completely amazing in those role and there were clock time when we were doing it that it felt like — even though I had to explain the book of facts , it felt like The Patty Duke Show , or Bewitched , ” Mancini , name - checking a pair of vintage TV bear witness where one doer plays two character who often share vista . “ It ’s relatively elementary stock split - screenland result that are n’t so simple when you actually have to do it . It ’s surprisingly complicated . And Lachlan as luck would have it just took to it like a duck’s egg to piddle , not only being able to play these two different characters , but just the technological challenge of having to toy opposite yourself . ”

Watson ’s transformation from Glen to Glenda , or vice versa , was something Mancini and his team construct into the shooting agenda . “ Lachlan would typically be in costume as Glenda , and we would do the Glenda side of the scene , and then they would have to be send off to hair and makeup for an hour and a half to do the transformation into Glen , ” Mancini said . “ And so we would always have to be thrifty to schedule other stuff to pullulate during that hr and a half waiting for Lachlan to come back to us as Glen . ”
It was a challenge , but a fun challenge , Mancini said , with an important driving force behind it . “ I hope that our queer audience , our trans hearing , will really love these characters and the performance that Lachlan gave as these case . I desire they love it as much as I do , because it was really of import to us that we honour the trans experience with these eccentric . ”
Fans of Chucky season one — and there are a lot ; the show was a bang hit for Syfy and USA — know that queer representation wo n’t be new for time of year two . Two of the show ’s main adolescent characters , Jake ( Zackary Arthur ) and Devon ( Björgvin Arnarson ) , fell in love last season while duck Chucky ’s homicidal ira together , and it ’s a relationship Mancini was happy to revisit . “ All of us who work on the show were so excited that the Jake and Devon romance — ‘ Jevon’—worked as well as it did , and the buff really respond very positively to that , ” he said . “ So I wanted to cover that family relationship and I wanted to be personal with it and abide by some of my own experiences , because [ when I was ] a teen revulsion fan , I wish that I could have visit some [ queer ] delegacy for myself take in this hooey . So it ’s great that the creation has germinate , that we can do this now , and we can do it fairly casually actually , which is awesome . ”

By “ casually , ” he intend that “ Jevon ” are a unlined part of the narrative . singular kids exist ; that ’s just normal life , and is therefore just another part of the narrative here . Of course , in Chucky ’s fount , there ’s the added cistron of a killer doll on the loose , not to mention the fact that Jake and Devon get shipped off to a Catholic reform shoal early in season two . “ One of the struggles that young homophile multitude often have is tenseness with their faith , ” Mancini said . “ As a Thomas Kyd who was upgrade Catholic , I certainly had authority figures undulate their fingers at me , severalise me that I was big and going to hell . And I wanted to look at what that ’s like for a gay nestling , or two sunny kids , in a relationship , in a bud Latinian language , [ and ] what that kind of stress does to the relationship . It gets very pregnant for them even without having to defend themselves against multiple Chucky dolls who want to kill them . Those piteous boys have a lot break on ! ”
It all comes back to the fact that despite Chucky ’s joyful gore and the diabolical antic of its villains , the show also has a remarkably caring meat . “ I suppose fans will enjoy construe the progression of [ Jake and Devon ’s ] relationship , ” Mancini said . “ And I retrieve Glen and Glenda as well , their situation is very interesting . And as I order sooner , it was important to all of us , including Lachlan , that we honor the trans see through our own cockeyed metaphoric lens . ”
Chucky returns October 5 on Syfy and USA .
