Well , peradventure not “ easy ” steps — after all , it have designer Zachary Paisley 80 days , some serious manual labor , $ 1586 in full build costs , and a whole lot of math to put together the world ’s first Rubik ’s Cube - forge 15 - inch Direct - Servo Subwoofer . I call up you will fit in that the results were deserving the effort . Naturally , when something this poise comes along , we pick the brain of those responsible . you’re able to look into out a full interview with Zachary after the good luck , along with a gallery of the soma , and a link to his instructions on how to make one of these for yourself .
Sean Fallon : Why Rubik ’s ?
Zachary Paisley : The theme for the Rubik ’s Cube come about from shopping for pigboat and looking at what DIY - ers were doing with their soma — in two words , “ bore me . ” The intact opinion process behind most DIY - emergency room , especially when it come to sound , is to make it look like a major maker built it , to make it blend into the background . I saw one serviceman who turned his end board into a sub and another who built it into his desk . I think “ why not take the opposite attack ? ” Rather than have people ignore something I made ; I want them to REALLY discover it . From there , the specific innovation for the Rubik ’s Cube just come to me as I was driving to oeuvre ; it seemed a perfect tantrum .

SF : What was the most difficult face of the project ?
ZP : I have been build sculptures and other artworks since high schooltime but this was my first speaker build — two completely unlike ball games . To be honest though , the design , calculations , building — none of that was out of reach for me . The hardest part was convince everyone who was take in ( family , girlfriend , roommates , a pissed off landlord , even more soaked off neighbour ) that I was n’t insane and attempting something like this WAS a practiced idea — I received a mint of flack for it .
SF : Did you encounter any major problem with the body-build along the means ?

ZP : Yes — two . The first I encountered halfway through . I worked out the dimension of the bomber to be a scale leaf histrionics of the teaser , but miscalculated the thickness of the wood needed for the prohibited square . I had to increase the thickness of the out shell , which push me to increase the thickness of the inside shell . It be me five days ’ oeuvre . The braggart mistake , though modest ( no pun think ) , was the end - weight . I guessed about 75 lbs and buy leg that I thought would work . After attaching them ( without the driver / amp ) the legs practically rip out from the 100 lb shell just from shove off on it . I put in some bun foot meant for couch and have n’t had any problem since .
SF : You utter about it a bit on your project site , but give us a quick theme of the sound tone one could expect from the Rubik ’s Subwoofer .
ZP : In a word—”Danceable . ” Just Kidding ! avowedly , I was trying to not get my hopes up but was quite surprised by the timber . I had hear to other subs on my organization before for testing purposes and they taught me not to get one for stereo purposes . This sub , however , has turned me the other way . After playing around a bit with the stuffing / form / crosswalk , I was able-bodied to so seamlessly blend the submarine to my other speakers . My finish here all along was to make a sub that I could use with my music and not a god - awful booming box heard two miles aside . In all distressfulness , it ’s get some bully sound and I ’d merrily put it next to anything bought for G more at an audiophile hangout , mayhap I ’ll even offer a million buck if they can prove it ’s good .

[ SF : Sounds like a challenge ! I ’d put my money on Zachary though . ]
SF : Would you ever consider selling your creation , or making another for a paying customer ?
ZP : I ’ve been told to commercialize it by a few citizenry and I even have an pass . I do n’t know if I could ever sell the prototype though , it ’s quite special to me . As for making another for a paying customer , I ’d screw to — I had a blast making this one . It was really the first clip I get to blend my fine art into A / V engine room ( what I do professionally ) . In fact , I had so much fun making this I ’m currently work on the equality and drawings for two stereo fronts in the similitude of Coca Cola peddle machines , one older fashioned and one new . In all seriousness , I would definitely make a modeled loudspeaker system for someone who wanted one .

SF : So how about make a subwoofer out of Legos — the tech eccentric ’s other best-loved miniature ?
ZP : I had SOO many Legos as a boy ! Of course the haul to Legos is which one do you model after — they make out out with new types of bricks every five minutes ! Lego set would make a GREAT system—5.1 : long bricks for the front , the four - prong square for the sub and the angled ones for the tail end . Good call ! Want me to build you one , Sean ?
[ SF : Hell , yeah , I would wish a Lego subwoofer . Make a few in fact . I ’ll put them together and make the coolest Lego fort ever . ]

SF : Can you even solve a Rubik ’s Cube ?
ZP : The closest I ever add up to solving a Rubik ’s Cube as a child was rip the semblance off to match the side I needed them to . I actually bought a square block for pic purpose last week and before I had the chance to photograph it , my girlfriend mingle it beyond recognition … two hours later I found a website that allow you to map the side of meat and then give you the method for solve it . give thanks God .
