Friday ’s news show thatplans are ostensibly afoot for a movie based upon Glen Larson ’s original Battlestar Galactica seriesproduced some judgement as unexpected as the news show itself . There are really people who favor the original ?

I ’ll admit ; I do n’t even really see how Universal could really do a moving picture entirely base on the original serial in lighter of the winner and credence of the Ron Moore ’s reboot – Not only is the new showBattlestar Galacticato the absolute majority of people these twenty-four hours , but how could any new unexampled adaptation not pick up on some of the themes of the reboot when they themselves are picked up from the original ? obviously , though , the idea emphatically appeals to some of you :

Look , I love Dirk Benedict as much as the next man who grew up watching The A Team , but this whole estimate – never mind that a movie based on the original that ignores the far higher-ranking reboot , but that a film establish on the original that ignores the far superior reboot and is somehow better for it – boggle my mind . I loved the old BSG . . . when I was * five * . Star Wars was so cool , I need my sci - fi action mechanism repair anywhere I could get it . Wait , you think of , there ’s a * boob tube show * like that ? AWESOME ! ! !
The new BSG , however , is one of the near TV demonstrate ever . ( Yes , I ’ll support that , it ’s not hyberbole — it ’s stumbled , but when it zoom , it * soar * ) . It ’s sure as shooting one of the best * science fable * TV shows ever ( deplorably , not many competitors ) — mostly because it takes itself , AND the audience , seriously .
A few long time back when I first started dating my GF , I prod her into getting into the novel BSG . Never like sci - fi , never like much musical genre stuff , had never seen the original . She * loves * the Modern show , and consume it voraciously .
Watching it through her eye , I ultimately settle about six months ago to show her the original series . Just the “ moving-picture show ” ( the first three episodes or so ) , and the Kobol episode . I myself had n’t seen the show in probably a decade , so it was going to be a delicacy to see how interchangeable / different it all was .
Folks , I have it away that the nostalgia prevents us from slamming a show made in a more clean-handed time , one made when we were all FARRR younger than we are now .
But it ’s awful . Legitimately * painful * to watch . Objectively cringe - induce at nearly every bit .
Even if you take it as Malva sylvestris , even if you take the bizarre production values and Georgia home boy - opera house - style cast , even if you lower your standards about as low as you may go . . . it ’s still awful .
And in comparability , it makes the Modern series look like Shakespeare .
Which , in a way , I accept it as such . substance , it ’s the same “ story ” as before , but the production is so much adept , so unlike , so fleshed - out and used to take it in such a unlike direction , that there really is n’t much to equate the two at all . It ’s like Olivier doing Hamlet and your local high-pitched shoal doing Hamlet — same play , but * c’m on * .
I ’m now wholly curious , because I had a like reaction on seeing an instalment from the original series lately . To those of you who wish the master copy in some way other than as camp , why ? And is it in any way translatable to a fresh movie ?
