The finer details of how fledgeling stars form is shroud in mystery story and , more literally , debris . By using one of the public ’s most advanced observatories , however , the enigma is clearing and the rubble is come into focus . And it is likely mold like a pretzel .

Two baby stars were discovered in the [ BHB2007 ] 11 organisation located between 600 and 700 light - years from Earth . Using the Atacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array ( ALMA ) , astronomers were able to take the distribution of rubble around these two stars with incredibly   high precision , focusing on the detritus both near and far from the objects , publishing their finding inScience .

The twin stars are hem in by stellar disks , each weighing a few times the slew of Jupiter and extending for less than 500 million km ( 300 million nautical mile ) . These circumstellar disks are central for star evolution , as stars uprise by feeding on the textile they can steal from them .

“ We see two compact sources that we interpret as circumstellar magnetic disk around the two immature stars , ” lead source Felipe Alves from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics , said in astatement . “ The size of each of these disks is similar to the asteroid belt in our Solar System and the separation between them is 28 times the aloofness between the Sun and the Earth . ”

The " cosmic pretzel " is shape by the gravitative and electromagnetic force of the system , and has a mass   of roughly 80 Jupiters . The visually take pretzel - like coming into court is really a complex interlaced stream of junk that surround the entire organisation , and the spiral social organization provide details on how the dust run onto the stars . The process is not direct ; the stars accrete passel from the disk in two phase . The material in the disc is accrete into the stellar disk , in the loops seen imaged by ALMA , and then the stars accrete the stuff from their circumstellar disks .   Data analysis of the image also prove the less massive , brighter circumstellar magnetic disk ( the lower one in the picture ) accretes more material .

“ We expect this two - level accumulation procedure to drive the kinetics of the binary system during its mass accumulation phase , ” said Alves . “ While the practiced accord of these observations with possibility is already very promising , we will need to study more young binary systems in point to better realize how multiple stars form . ”

These observance are very of import . There are still many alien on how stars shape and these observations put specific constraint on the fashion model we use in stellar uranology .
