This incredible fairytale image , “ The Queen ’s Armada , ” is a parturiency of love . Specifically , the dear of a girl for her mother , who died of cancer . ArtistKirsty Mitchellhas been make her own queen - tale images , under the title “ Wonderland , ” for three eld , in the memory of her mother .
Mitchell partake in some of her images with us , and excuse the physical process of create these beautiful , delicate artworks . Here ’s her explanation for “ The Queen ’s Armada ” :
I designed and made the costume , props and steel ship . The attire was made from 240 hand paint wooden fans . Everything is real include the smoke . And took 5 month to create everything for the shoot .

‘ Wonderland ’ began in July 2009 , as a little summer labor in memory of my mother Maureen whom I lose to cancer 7 months before . She was an English instructor who spent a life inspiring myself , and generations of nipper with her captivating stories and plays . She was my best friend , and so escape through my camera promptly became the only way to portion out with the realness of my loss . Nothing set up me for the enormous personal journeying that followed , as the project spiralled into a 3 - class adventure , run me to go forth my 10 - year calling as a fashion designer , to commit my time to come to producing the al-Qur’an and expo of the serial . The labor has been create out of nothing , and is the result of relentless toilsome work , in which almost everything within the frame has been made or designed by myself with the help of the hair and make - up artist Elbie Van Eeden and the occasional forgivingness of supporter . There are no large accompaniment teams , designers or hairdresser involve , and nothing has been commission . The characters and their worlds are the blurred hybrids of the stories and Quran illustrations from my childhood memory with my female parent . Nothing is a direct recreation of a particular taradiddle , and the title ‘ Wonderland , ’ was purely to verbalise a young lady ’s escapism through the Sir Frederick Handley Page of her book – something that echoed my personal situation in real life .
Despite initial impressions , my work is not the result of multiple digital composite and Photoshop special issue . It is for this reason that my workplace sits between the lines of traditional picture taking and digital artistry as all the elements let in their locations and colors are genuine , made by hand , and unfeigned scale . The motion-picture show are svelte with retouching , and in a few exceptions I summate small manipulation to indicate a sentiency of magic trick , but that is all . My focal point is to make ‘ fantasy for real ’ using anything from smoke bombs glue to umbrella , to paint tree diagram and making giantesses out of models poise in 8 foot dresses . I press myself to create whatever is necessary to bring the illusions to life-time , and then document the unconscious process in my online ‘ Diary ’
The support for the project from around the world has been consuming and at sentence deeply moving . I never imagined anyone to understand the emotion I felt behind the camera , yet I go on to receive letters from mass from all walk of animation who feel connect with its sentiment and find smasher with the frame .
The series is now in its last stage with its windup planned for the end of the summertime 2012 . There are presently 60 composition in the ingathering .
“ Gammelyn ’s Daughter ” — a fire up dream .
Gammelyn ’s Daughter — burgeon forth in a vast field of ling from the top of a ladder . The apparel was design by me , the image was scarcely retouched , it is currently the most democratic slam in the serial .
Dryad – One of the first icon film for the series . take just after the dawn whilst I was standing in the steam ( freeze ! ) . The tree was painted with non - toxic pulverisation rouge , and the costume was design and made by myself .
Lady of the Lake – one of the happiest moments of my life . Shot in a lake up to my neck in reek water at 7.30pm just before the sundown . The image was barely retouched ; it was just a magical moment I ’ll never block .
The Faraway Tree – One of the hardest shoots I have ever done . The ships are real and they were in the tree ! Everyone thinks this is a Photoshop montage , but it was n’t , and it was really hard oeuvre ! It took 5 hours to set everything up , everything you see was in front of the tv camera when I took the motion picture .
The Distant Pull of memorial — Wings made by me , shoot just after the dawn , its a really mere but very poignant photo for me .
The Storyteller — intact costume designed and made by me . The headdress is cover in sweet bluebells and the record book are all substantial and over 120 years old , they are not cloned in Photoshop . I waited 12 calendar month to take the mental picture , as these flower only appear for a couple of workweek a twelvemonth .
The Lavender Princess – probably the most celebrated image in the series and in reality the very first picture I took . Dress plan by me , dope is real and was make by fixing a gage bomb being tied to the flower parasol .
The Briar Rose – costume design by me , dash in the rain on a very cold dark January day . The theoretical account was up a ladder for over an hour poor thing , smoke is real .
spirit away – shot in a snowstorm , the manikin is actually my friend the Wonderland haircloth and make - up artist Elbie Van Eeden . Flower umbrella made by me , the trail in the C was powder rouge .
