Acer Iconia Tablet Lightning Review: The Transformer Prime’s Chubby Cousin

Acer is n’t exactly the first name that pop into your headland when it comes to top - tier tablets , but the company ’s trying to change that with the Iconia A510 . But does it run into the mellisonant point between functioning and damage ?

Design

From the front it looks like every other Android tablet : 16×9 , we get it . From the side , though , you could see that it ’s dense than the Transformer Prime or the iPad . It has a micro HDMI out , micro USB out , and squeamish pair of Dolby speakers . The back is rubberized and emblazoned with the Olympic logo .

Using It

In general it ’s very fast , but there are some bugs here and there that you do n’t see in top - tyre tablets . The audio sound solid . Its guts are built for gaming , but the bulkier frame does get heavy after a little while .

The Best Part

The 9800 mAh Li - polymer stamp battery commit the A510 tons of animation . I was able to watch two full - length pic , do a good amount of play , and lashings of internet meandering all on a single accusation — with succus to part with .

Tragic Flaw

The screen is very much ho - hum . It ’s the same screen that ’s been on most Android tablet for over a year now : Not as bright as the Transformer Prime , and not as eminent - res as the new iPad .

This Is Weird…

Acer put a little bit of its own twist on Ice Cream Sandwich by add the Acer Ring ( picture ) . It ’s basically a customizable shortcut launcher that you may pop up from anywhere in the UI . It ’s reasonably , but you ’ll almost certainly never expend it .

Test Notes

Battery life-time is the bee ’s knee . experience over 10 minute with medium usage .

Most apps worked cleanly , and then there would abruptly be a haywire one ( like in Shadowgun THD ) . mayhap that was Shadowgun ’s defect , but it happened too often for the Iconia not to portion out some of the inculpation .

The optional protective case is actually very nice . It wo n’t automatically turn the covert off like the iPad ’s does , but it ’s thin and grippy .

At 1.54 Syrian pound , this thing is artificial intelligence n’t light . The Tranformer Prime is 1.29 pound and the newfangled iPad is 1.44 . What pass water it finger heavier , though , is the thickness — it ’s .43 in . It just makes it feel blockier and it ’s less fun to hold on the subway .

It comes with a little micro USB - to - USB female adapter so you may plug in a jump driving or even a USB keyboard or mouse . perhaps handy ?

The sound it produces is pretty good . Definitely intimately than the Transformer Prime . At least the speakers are on unlike sides .

Should You Buy It?

Eh , it ’s a pretty good tab , but at $ 450 , it ’s not good enough . Acer put a slap-up processor in here , but the screen is extremely underwhelming . And the bulk just clear it feel old than it is . Bring it down to $ 300 or $ 350 , and yeah , it ’d be a reasonably in force buy , but you could get the Transformer Prime for just $ 50 more . It ’s deserving the difference .
